Кафедра "Загальна електротехніка" заснована в 1931 році на базі електротехнічного факультету.
Курс електротехніки як самостійної дисципліни першим почав читати Клобуков Микола Петрович ще в 1892 році. Першим завідувачем кафедри був професор Копняєв Павло Петрович.
Кафедра входить до складу Навчально-наукового інституту енергетики, електроніки та електромеханіки Національного технічного університету "Харківський політехнічний інститут" .
У складі науково-педагогічного колективу кафедри працюють: 2 доктора технічних наук, 5 кандидатів технічних наук; 2 співробітника мають звання професора, 3 – доцента.

A comparative analysis of the design features of the electromagnetic current limiter with copper or superconducting winding is carried out. The operation principle of the electromagnetic short-circuit current limiter of inductive type with copper or superconducting winding is considered. The peculiarities of operation modes of the electromagnetic short-circuit current limiter of inductive type with copper or superconducting winding are analyzed. Using results of the mathematical modeling of the magnetic system of the electromagnetic short-circuitcurrent limiter by the Finite Element Method in the FEMM software environment, the character of the distribution of the magnetic flux density in the nominal mode and in the current limiting mode is determined, which allows to determine the parameters of the current limiter and design features. In accordance with the design features of the electromagnetic short-circuit current limiter of inductive type, the sequence of calculation of the basic parameters of the magnetic system, taking into account the voltage drop factor, is given. The basic equations of the electric equilibrium of the voltage drop of the electromagnetic short-circuit current limiter of inductive type for nominal mode and short-circuit conditions are given. The use of the design circuit of the electromagnetic short-circuit current limiter with superconducting winding can provide energy-saving in nominal mode. V.The article analyzes the existing methods and ways of developing and improving information and energy systems and grids. A number of questions are analyzed regarding the prospects for the development of information and energy systems and power lines. It has been determined that the basis of the electric power industry is the integrated energy system, which provides centralized energy supply to domestic consumers, interacts with the energy systems of neighboring countries, and ensures the export and import of electric power. It is concluded that in recent years, the so-called “cloud technologies” have become increasingly popular. From an analysis of the current state of the electric power industry, it follows that the need for its modernization and improvement. Accordingly, in connection with the transition of the world electric power industry to energy-efficient technol ogies, the main attention should be directed to studying the connection between the processes of transmission and distribution of electric power, as well as the related “smart” measurements, issues of the operation of energy markets and the operation of regulatory standards. It was noted that with the creation of the concept of “smart grids”, it is important to develop appropriate regulatory and technical support for the integration of dispersed energy sources using existing modern power electronics devices and storage devices, which will lead to the creation of a capacity management platform based on modern technologies. It is noted that the possibility of functioning in real time is provided due to the specific organization of the information grid, rather than an electric grid, which is provided due to the specific organization of the information grid.
