Abstract

Diplomacy remains a core instrument of international relations in an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty, rapid technological change, and increasing intercultural interaction. In the contemporary international system, effective diplomatic activity requires not only knowledge of foreign policy and international law, but also a deep understanding of diplomatic protocol, etiquette, communication norms, and ethical standards. The ability to act professionally in formal international settings has become an essential competence for specialists in international relations and public communications. The course «Fundamentals of diplomatic activity, diplomatic protocol and etiquette» is designed to provide bachelor’s students with a systematic understanding of the nature, evolution, and institutional foundations of diplomacy. It introduces the key functions, forms, and actors of diplomacy, with particular attention to both classical diplomatic practice and contemporary developments such as public, digital, economic, and cultural diplomacy. Special emphasis is placed on diplomatic protocol and etiquette as practical tools of official communication, international representation, and soft power. These lecture notes aim to offer a comprehensive overview of diplomatic activity as both a theoretical concept and a practical professional field. Throughout the course, students will explore the international legal framework of diplomacy, the structure and functions of diplomatic institutions, accreditation procedures, diplomatic correspondence, negotiation processes, ceremonial practices, and ethical standards of diplomatic service. Particular attention is given to intercultural communication and the management of cultural differences in diplomatic contexts. The course is structured to move from foundational concepts to applied aspects of diplomatic practice. Each lecture is organized around clearly defined objectives and includes structured lecture materials, key concepts, practical examples, and questions for self-control to support independent learning and critical analysis. Real-world cases from diplomatic history and modern international practice are used to illustrate theoretical principles and develop practical skills.
