Вибір мов зумовлений тим, що цю категорію детально досліджували здебільшого в мовах, де вона набула граматичного статусу, чого не можна сказати про українську, у якій немає конкретних морфологічних засобів для її вираження. Натомість показниками визначеності і невизначеності в українській мовній системі слугують лексичні засоби, а отже, аналізована категорія властива їй, але як імпліцитне явище. У результаті цього можуть виникати питання щодо адекватного перекладу та правильної передачі засобів для вираження визначеності або невизначеності, де мова оригіналу є артиклевою, а мова перекладу – безартиклевою і навпаки. У статті проаналізовано категорію визначеності та невизначеності, розглянуто сутність цього явища та визначено основні засоби її вираження в обох мовах, їхні спільні і відмінні риси. При аналізі цього явища в німецькій мові зосереджено увагу на протиставленні визначеного та невизначеного статусу, що передано передусім за допомогою відповідних артиклів. В українській мові розкрито основні способи передавання зазначеної категорії на різних мовних рівнях. З урахуванням цього порушено питання про можливі еквіваленти передачі категорії визначеності та невизначеності при перекладі з артиклевих мов на безартиклеві. Досліджено основні роботи лінгвістів із вивчення цієї категорії – як в артиклевих, так і в безартиклевих мовах, на основі яких сформовано основні тенденції подальшого дослідження категорії визначеності та невизначеності в українській і німецькій мовах. Надано характеристику та узагальнення основних ознак цієї категорії для окреслення її місця в процесі мовної категоризації дійсності.The article is devoted to the actual linguistic problem – the categorical status of definiteness and indef initeness in modern Ukrainian and German languages. The choice of languages is determined by the fact that this category has been studied in detail mainly in the languages, where it has acquired a grammatical status, which can not be said about Ukrainian, since it does not have specific morphological means for expressing this category. Instead, the indicators of definiteness and indefiniteness in the Ukrainian language system are lexical means, and therefore, this category is inherent in it, but as an implicit phenomenon. As a result, many issues about the adequate translation and proper transferring of means for expressing definiteness and indefiniteness, where the language of the original has the article, and the target language is devoid of the article and vice versa may arise. The article analyzes the category of definiteness and indefiniteness, discusses the essence of this phenomenon and defines the main means of its expression in both languages, common and distinctive features of these means. In the analysis of this phenomenon in the German language, the attention is focused on the opposition of a definite and indefinite status, which manifests itself, first of all, with the help of the relevant articles. The analysis of Ukrainian language discloses the main ways of conveying this category in the Ukrainian language at different language levels. On this basis, the article raises the issue of the possible equivalents of the category of definiteness and indefiniteness interpretation when translating from the languages, that have articles, into languages, that are devoid of articles. The main works of linguists on the study of this category in languages, that are devoid of the article were analyzed, on the basis of which the main tendencies of the further studies of the category of definiteness and indefiniteness in the Ukrainian and German languages were formed.
