Optimal tuning of multi-stage PID controller for dynamic frequency control of microgrid system under climate change scenarios
    (Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2025) Alouache, B.; Helaimi, M.; Djilali, A. B.; Gabbar, H. A.; Allouache, H.; Yahdou, A.
In recent years, the use of renewable energy has become essential to preserve the climate from pollution and global warming. To utilize renewable energy more effectively, the microgrid system has emerged, which is a combination of renewable energies such as wind and solar power. However, due to sudden and random climate fluctuations, energy deviation and instability problems have arisen. To address this, storage systems and diesel engines have been incorporated. Nevertheless, this approach has led to another issue: frequency deviation in the microgrid system. Therefore, most recent studies have focused on finding ways to reduce frequency deviation. The goal of this work is to study and compare various improvement methods in terms of frequency deviation. Methodology. We first simulated the microgrid system using the PID controller based on the following algorithms: krill herd algorithm (KHA) and cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). In the second phase, we replaced the PID controller with the multi-stage PID controller and optimized its parameters using the KHA and the CSA. In the final phase, we tested the response of the microgrid system to these methods under a range of influencing factors. Results. The results initially showed the superiority of the KHA over the other algorithms in improving the parameters of the PID controller. In the second phase, the results showed a significant advantage of the multi-stage PID controller in terms of speed and stabilization time, as well as in reducing the frequency deviation compared to the PID controller. Practical value. Based on the tests conducted on the microgrid system, we can conclude that the multi-stage PID controller based on the KHA can be relied upon to solve these types of problems within the microgrid system.

Voltage regulation using three phase electric spring by fuzzy logic controller
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2023) Ikhe, Atul; Pahariya, Yogesh
The renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power have increased significantly in recent years. However, as the generation of renewable energy has become more integrated, its intermission and instability have a major impact on the power system’s stability, such as voltage instability and frequency flicker. Purpose. In order to address the different power quality issues brought on by intermittent and unreliable renewable energy sources, electric spring offers a novel solution. It was proposed as a technique for regulating load and adjusting output power. For the integration of electric springs with noncritical loads, a contemporary control mechanism is described in this paper. Novelty. The suggested work is innovative in that it presents an improved control technique that efficiently maintains voltage stability as voltage changes. Method. The proposed technique is based on an analysis of the initial conditions and input data for developing fuzzy rules for calculating compensating voltages in relation to the difficulties. Results. This suggested fuzzy controller will be able to maintain the regular operation of the electric spring of power output control stability as well as continuing to provide power factor improvement and voltage control for significant loads, including the home’s protection system. Practical value. A detailed study of typical voltage regulation is undertaken, supported by simulation results, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the applied control scheme in cancelling the corresponding issues with power quality.

Application of whale algorithm optimizer for unified power flow controller optimization with consideration of renewable energy sources uncertainty
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2023) Laifa, Abdelaziz; Ayachi, Bilel
Purpose. In this paper an allocation methodology of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) controllers, more specifically, the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is proposed. As the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the conventional electric grid increases, its effect on this location must be investigated. Research studies have shown that the uncertainty of RESs in power generation influences the reactive power of a power system network and consequently its overall transmission losses. The novelty of the proposed work consists in the improvement of voltage profile and the minimization of active power loss by considering renewable energy sources intermittency in the network via optimal location of UPFC device. The allocation strategy associates the steady-state analysis of the electrical network, with the location and adjustment of controller parameters using the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) technique. Methodology. In order to determine the location of UPFC, approaches are proposed based on identification of a line which is the most sensitive and effective with respect to voltage security enhancement, congestion alleviation as well as direct optimization approach. The optimum location of UPFC in the power system is discussed in this paper using line loading index, line stability index and optimization method. The objective function is solved using the WOA algorithm and its performance is evaluated by comparison with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Results. The effectiveness of the proposed allocation methodology is verified through the analysis of simulations performed on standard IEEE 30 bus test system considering different load conditions. The obtained results demonstrate that feasible and effective solutions are obtained using the proposed approach and can be used to overcome the optimum location issue. Additionally, the results show that when UPFC device is strategically positioned in the electrical network and uncertainty of RES is considered, there is a significant influence on the overall transmission loss and voltage profile enhancements of the network.
