    Vibration-based detection of axial-flow compressor unstable operation

    Computer-aided and experimental research of a axial stage stability loss is presented. Informative criteria of the presurge compressor state is formulated. It is proved that the harmonic of a rotating stall is unstable, standing out sharply against noise; thus it can serve as a rotating stall indicator and a surge precursor. It was proved that vibration from the mounted on casing sensor can be applicable for rotating stall detection. An algorithm is proposed that detects the compressor pre-surge state by vibrations of the compressor casing. The algorithm is easy to be implemented in engine control and health monitoring systems.
