Abstract

The place and role of evaluating the students’ knowledge in teaching the course of "General Physics" in the technical university are discussed. The traditional methods of control, such as frontal and individual recitations, review works, end-of-term tests and exams are described. A complexity of their implementation is related to the significant reduction of teaching hours to study physics contributed by the educational curricula for bachelors, specialists and masters, and their weaknesses lay in the lack of information in the reflection of students’ knowledge and the haphazard and subjective character. The effectiveness of evaluation system based on regular testing during the practical and laboratory classes and use of individua thematic objectives was shown. This system allows getting a number of grades during the semester, which make the semester assessment. This rating score can be regarded as the evaluation of all activities throughout the semester and reflects the level of students’ knowledge of all chapters studied. This evaluation can be adopted as a fairly objective indicator, which is taken into account when assigning scholarships to students. Different functions of the regular evaluation of knowledge and their role in improving the quality of training of future engineers was examined.
