Abstract
It is given a general approach to the investigation of the causes of the ICE failures, which arise when the kinematic connection
between the rotational and progressive moving components is broken, what leads to severe damage and destruction of the
parts. It is shown that the determination of the cause of the failure in this type of destruction is the greatest complexity for investigation
in connection with the large amount of debris and considerable deformation of the components. There were considered,
on specific examples, the main causes of severe damage to ICE, including operational damage caused by liquid entrance into the
cylinder and oil starvation, as well as production defects which occur during the manufacture and / or assembly of the valve
mechanism and piston pins. There were considered and analyzed the main signs of the specified types of damages, what allowed
basing on the separation of these signs into the main ones, confirming and specifying, to develop a simple method for determining
the causes of failure in severe engine damages.
