Кафедра "Технологія кераміки, вогнетривів, скла та емалей", первісна назва – кафедра силікатів, була створена в 1926 році в складі Харківського Хіміко-технологічного інституту.

Першим завідувачем кафедри (1926 – 1941 рр.) та засновником наукової школи був вчений зі світовим ім'ям, тричі Лауреат Державних премій, Заслужений діяч науки і техніки, академік АН УССР і член-кореспондент АН СССР, доктор технічних наук, професор Петро Петрович Будніков. Підготовка спеціалістів з силікатних технологій була започаткована в 1910 році на кафедрі мінеральної сировини під керівництвом академіка Єгора Івановича Орлова.

Кафедра входить до складу Навчально-наукового інституту хімічних технологій та інженерії Національного технічного університету "Харківський політехнічний інститут".

У складі науково-педагогічного колективу кафедри працюють: 5 докторів та 3 кандидата технічних наук; 4 співробітника мають звання професора, 3 – доцента.

    Size effects and thermoelectric properties of Bi0.98Sb0.02 thin films

    The room-temperature dependences of thermoelectric properties (the Seebeck coefficient S, the electrical conductivity σ, the Hall coefficient RH, and the thermoelectric power factor P = S2·σ) on the thickness (d = 5 - 250 nm) of the Bi0.98Sb0.02 solid solution thin films grown on mica substrates by thermal evaporation in vacuum from a single source were obtained. It is shown that the monotonic component of the σ(d) dependence is well described within the framework of the Fuchs-Sondheimer theory for the classical size effect. The presence of an oscillating component in the d-dependences of σ, S, RH and S2·σ is attributed to the manifestation of the quantum size effect, and the experimentally determined period of quantum oscillations Δd = 45 ± 5 nm is in good agreement with the Δd value calculated theoretically within the framework of the model of an infinitely deep potential well.     Thermal conductivity of PbSe1-xTex (x = 0 – 0.04) solid solutions

    The dependence of lattice thermal conductivity λL of pressed samples of PbSe1-xTex solid solutions on the composition (x = 0 – 0.04) at a temperature of 325 K is obtained. The λL(х) curve shows a maximum near х = 0.0075. Measurement of the temperature dependence of λL in the range of 150-600 K showed that a concentration anomaly in the same range of compositions is also observed on the composition dependence of power factor β in the temperature dependence of λL . The non-monotonic character of the λL(х) and β(х) dependences is associated with critical phenomena accompanying the transition of the percolation type from dilute to concentrated solid solutions. In the study and practical application of PbSe1-xTex solid solutions, it is necessary to take into account the non monotonic nature of the change in thermal conductivity with composition.     Thermodynamic analysis of solid phase reactions in SrO–Al₂O₃–SiO₂

    On the basis of thermodynamic calculations the values of the Gibbs energy of formation reactions of strontium anorthite from various raw materials in the temperature range of 773-1973 K were estimated. The study of SrO–Al₂O₃–SiO₂ system indicates the prospects of its further investigation of development of the radio transparent ceramic materials.

    Directed phase formation of functional glass-crystalline coatings for ceramics in TiO₂–Al₂O₃–SiO₂ system

    Possibility of obtaining of thin crystallization (less than 4 μm) of non-fritt coatings by adding significant number (up to 15 wt. %) of tin dioxide (SnO₂) to theire compounds was studied. It was found that titaniferous coatings, containing SnO₂ as mineralizer, promotes the directed mullite and stable anosovite phase formation. Glass-crystalling coatings with the easy-to-clean and biostability properties were obtained upon moulding temperature up to 1200 °C.

    Ceramic radiotransparent materials on the basis of BaO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ and SrO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ systems

    Based on the literature review, the authors made a justified choice of ceramic materials with a low dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent. The composition and process parameters (burning temperature - 1550 °C, burning duration - 5 hours) of producing of celsian and Sr-anorthite ceramics with low dielectric properties were defined. The phase composition of products of burning was examined. X-ray phase studies of Sr-ceramics after burning were conducted.
