Abstract
The factors that influenced the formation of Ukrainian identity during the statelessness of Ukraine are identified. The influence of the policy of Russification of the Soviet times on the changes of the ethnolinguistic structure of the population of Ukraine is outlined. Based on the analysis of statistical materials of population censuses, the dynamics of the number of Ukrainians, Ukrainian-speaking population, Russians and Russian-speaking population for 1959-1989 is revealed.
