Кафедра "Іноземні мови» була заснована у 1950 році з ініціативи доктора фізико-математичних наук А. П. Рогінського.

Кафедра входить до складу Навчально-наукового інституту міжнародної освіти Національного технічного університету "Харківський політехнічний інститут". Викладачі кафедри навчають іноземній мові майбутніх спеціалістів різних інженерних галузей. Понад 20 років кафедра успішно співпрацює з Мовним центром Магдебурського університету (Німеччина).

У складі науково-педагогічного колективу кафедри працюють 7 кандидатів наук: 4 – педагогічних, 2 – філологічних, 1 – технічних наук; 4 співробітника мають звання доцента.

    The article deals with the pedagogical conditions of using multimedia technologies in the process of distance learning of English for students of non-language higher educational institutions. The analysis of scientific sources on the study of the use of computer tools in the process of distance learning of a foreign language is carried out. The effectiveness of modern multimedia technologies in teaching English is substantiated and multimedia tools that significantly increase students' motivation and, as a result, the quality of their foreign language training are identified. The new possibilities of presenting educational material that open up to the teacher due to the introduction of multimedia resources into the educational process are highlighted. Considerable attention is paid to the role of feedback in ensuring effective interaction between student and teacher in the process of learning a foreign language in a distance format. It is noted that it is necessary to adhere to the principle of blended learning in the process of mastering a foreign language by students in the realities of distance learning, which also contributes to improving the quality and effectiveness of foreign language teaching. The most important pedagogical condition of distance learning of English is determined, which is the professionalization of training of future specialists. It is concluded that the digital format of multimedia technologies opens up new pedagogical opportunities for the organization of distance learning of a foreign language.

    Forming grammatical competence while teaching professionally-oriented foreign language in non-linguistic universities

    The article deals with teaching grammar in Ukrainian education community. Students start learning grammar at secondary, sometimes even at primary schools, and continue acquiring it while studying at institutions of higher education. However, qualitative progress in grammar usage while writing and speaking English is rarely seen. One possible explanation is that there is a widely adopted approach in Ukrainian education system according to which the formation of grammatical competence goes through a number of fixed steps from grammar knowledge to speech practice. It is assumed that detailed and thorough knowledge of rules of English grammar and their difference from grammar rules of the Ukrainian language contributes to better understanding of peculiar features of the English language and further it positively influences the acquisition of all language skills and abilities. Unfortunately, considering the real situation of teaching English at Ukrainian universities under conditions of insufficient class-room academic hours, such an approach does not bring desired results. Communicative approach of teaching foreign languages and competencies that are to be developed demands a different approach to teaching grammar that is a holistic approach.
