Analyzing the effect of the tool pass number and the direction of sliding burnishing on surface roughness
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2022) Nagy, Antal; Varga, Gyula
Nowadays, the concern of environmental protection is becoming more and more important in production as well. They often contribute to this by reducing or eliminating the amount of coolants and lubricants, or by using alternative machining methods. One of them is burnishing, which makes a positive effect on surface integrity, while reduces the environmental load. In this paper we examined the change in surface roughness achieved by burnishing after turning on a corrosion-resistant steel workpiece, where the number of burnishing passes and burnishing direction were changed. The results showed increased smoothness, bearing capacity and dimensional stability by increasing the number of passes from 1 to 2, however, the 3 times repetition did not show any additional favorable improvement on the surfaces. In case of the forward-backward-forward burnishing directions, further chipping occurred, in other cases the effect of the directions was negligible on the amplitude roughness parameters, but considerable on the parameters characterizing the roughness peak. The greatest improvement was achieved with the backward-forward settings.

Analysis of the change in roughness on a face-milled surface measured every 45° direction to the feed
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2021) Nagy, Antal; Kundrak, Janos
In this article, we analyze the difference (inhomogeneity) of the roughness values measured on a nonalloy carbon steel surface milled with a parallelogram-shaped (κr = 90°) insert as a function of the the tool movement direction and the relative position of the examining points on the workpiece surface. The characteristic distribution of roughness and the magnitude of the deviations were examined by measuring at selected points along several planes on a surface characterized by the movement conditions of the workpiece and the symmetrically arranged tool perpendicular to the machined surface, which formed double milling marks. The selected points mark the lines with specified inclinations with respect to the feed direction, and their measured values were compared. In these directions, the magnitude of the difference in roughness measures was obtained.

Investigation of the effect of areal roughness measurement length on face milled surface topographies
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2021) Nagy, Antal
Surface roughness is of great importance in the manufacturing industry, as it affects surfaces’ tribological properties (wear, friction, lubrication, etc.), corrosion resistance, fatigue strength and appearance. Areal roughness measurement, which provides a more comprehensive characterization of surfaces, is becoming increasingly popular, but systematic studies are still lacking, so measurements are often analyzed differently. In this paper, the effect of the measurement length is analyzed in the main measurement direction on areal roughness of face milled surface topographies, which were measured with a confocal chromatic sensor.

Influence of measurement settings on areal roughness with confocal chromatic sensor on face-milled surface
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2020) Nagy, Antal
Roughness measurement is of highlighted importance in production for describing the quality control of manufacturing processes for the functional, tribological, etc. properties of the surfaces of parts. In the last 15 years or so the areal roughness studied on topographies has also become more common, as it provides a more accurate and detailed c haracterization of the surfaces. However, with relatively little experience and different technical conditions, topographies are analyzed differently. Sometimes 3D topography is used only as an illustration; however, spatial roughness measurement can provide much more information. The effect of measurement speed and point density during roughness measurement on the areal roughness was investigated using a confocal chromatic sensor.

Changes in the values of roughness parameters on face-milled steel surface
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2020) Nagy, Antal; Kundrák, János
In this paper, the roughness characteristics of the face milled surface were investigated made with a parallelogram insert (κr = 90°) on C45 steel. Changes in surface roughness were analyzed for the specific surface created by the milling movement conditions (rotational main movement and linear feed motion). The topography was created by a tool moving in the plane of symmetry of the workpiece, which produced double cutting-edge grooves. We found that the roughness varies in different parts of the resulting pattern, and we analyzed its nature and the magnitude of the variance based on the average over the entire surface. Also, in parallel measurements, the Rz parameter was at its maximum in the symmetry plane, and in the perpendicular direction roughness values are the lowest in the middle and increase with distance.

Experimental study on surface roughness of face milled parts with round insert at various feed rates
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2020) Kundrák, János; Nagy, Antal; Markopoulos, Angelos P.; Karkalos, Nikolaos E.; Skondras-Giousios, D.
In the present paper, the variation of surface roughness of machined parts during symmetrical face milling is investigated. During this experimental work, the effect of using a milling insert with a round geometry under various feed rate values on the topography of milled parts is examined. For that purpose, both 2D and 3D surface roughness measurements were performed in three planes parallel to the feed direction, with one of the planes being on the symmetrical plane and the other two being at the same distance from it but in opposite sides. The analysis of the experimental results indicated that although surface roughness increases gradually with increase of feed rate, a considerable increase of surface roughness occurs for feed rate values over 0.4 mm/tooth. Moreover, the overall higher surface roughness values were found to be on the symmetrical plane, which was also more affected by the increase of feed rate than the other two planes.

Investigation of surface roughness on face milled parts with round insert in planes parallel to the feed at various cutting speeds
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2019) Kundrak, Janos; Nagy, Antal; Markopoulos, Angelos P.; Karkalos, Nikolaos E.
In this paper, the roughness of the surface produced by symmetrical face milling is examined. During the research work, the effect of the use of a round milling insert on the surface topography was studied at different cutting speeds. 2D and 3D surface roughness measurements were carried out in three measurement planes parallel to the feed direction, one of them being the plane of symmetry and the other two planes being at the same distance from it, in both sides. From the analysis of results, it was found that surface roughness decreases significantly for cutting speed values over 100 m/min and then its variation is minimal. Furthermore, higher values of surface roughness are observed in the symmetric plane than the other parallel planes and almost in every case, surface roughness was found to be larger on the entry side plane than the exit side plane.

Investigation of surface roughness characteristics of face milling
(Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", 2019) Nagy, Antal; Kundrak, Janos
Surface quality and accuracy affect the integrity and lifetime of machine parts and the operational requirements of the structural (or assembly) units. These are the reasons that the expected surface roughness must be planned based on the operational requirements of the parts. The path of the tool edge, which is defined by the characteristics of the kinematics of face milling, makes the milled surface inhomogeneous, which means the roughness analysis in various directions gives different values. In this paper the effect of increasing the feed rate on surface roughness is investigated. This cutting data is chosen because increasing the feed rate is an effective way to increase productivity.

Examination of 2D and 3D surface roughness parameters of face milled aluminium surfaces
(НТУ "ХПІ", 2018) Kundrák, János; Varga, Gyula; Nagy, Antal; Makkai, Tamás
Material removal with a rotating cutting tool has a series of special characteristics due to the movement relations. For face milling, looped cycloids occur, which also affects the roughness characteristics of the machined surface. This article analyses how the values of 2D and 3D roughness parameters change in symmetrical milling of flat surfaces of aluminium parts in planes parallel to the feed direction.
